Course Reserves Policy

Eligible Materials | Submitting Materials | Circulating Materials | More Information

Course Reserves in the CIIS Library serve to provide students with access to readings assigned by CIIS faculty. There are primarily two areas of Library Course Reserves services:

  • Physical items (books, print journals or A/V materials) – the Library holds these items on reserve shelves in the Library for onsite access
  • Electronic materials access (e-books, online journal articles, databases) – the Library assists faculty in locating and creating permanent links to the CIIS Library's electronic materials that can then be listed in syllabi, or course spaces on MyCIIS or Canvas.
  • Materials Eligible for Reserve

On a term-by-term basis, the Library can place required and recommended readings of physical items from course syllabi on our reserve shelves upon request. Reserves are held for the semester that the course is offered, then returned to faculty or to the Library stacks.

    Physical course reserves
Books, A/V materials, and print journal issues (originals only) can be placed on the Library's course reserve shelves. Copies of video or audio tapes, CDs or DVDs are not eligible, owing to copyright concerns.

If the Library does not already own an item, we will consider purchasing a copy if it otherwise meets our collection criteria, and we have ample lead time before the term begins. Owing to budgetary constraints, no more than six items will be purchased for any single course.

Individual articles or photocopies of chapters are not eligible for Library course reserve. It is recommended that you have your department assemble a copyright-compliant course reader for these materials. Course readers cannot be put on reserve in the Library.

    Submitting Reserve Materials

    Library course reserves
    • Check the Library Catalog to ensure that the Library owns the items you wish to place on reserve. Notify the Library as early as possible if the Library will need to purchase a book for your course. Please complete a suggestion for purchase. It can take over six weeks for the Library to acquire a new book; please take this into account.
    • You must submit a separate course reserves request form for each class no less than two weeks before the beginning of the semester.
    • If you wish to place a personal copy of a book or video on reserve, please bring it to the Circulation Desk along with a completed physical reserves request form. All materials will be returned to you at the end of the semester.

    Circulation of Reserve Materials

Library course reserve items circulate to students for two hours at a time. Students may check out Library-owned reserve books within two hours of the Library's closing and opt to keep them overnight, but must return them within two hours of the Library's opening the next day. Overdue fines are $2.00 per day.

Reference books, A/V materials and Faculty-owned copies on reserve are for library use only, and may not be checked out.
