Course Reserves Policy

Eligible Materials | Submitting Materials | Circulating Materials | More Information

Through the course reserve system the Library provides students with access to readings assigned by CIIS faculty. Reserves are either physically stored in the Library (library course reserves) or posted to ERes, the online course reserves system.

Materials Eligible for Reserve

The Library places required and recommended readings from course syllabi on reserve. Reserves are held for the semester that the course is offered, then returned to faculty or to the Library stacks.

Library course reserves
Books and videos (originals only) can be placed on library course reserve. Copies of video or audio tapes, CDs or DVDs are not eligible, owing to copyright concerns.

If the Library does not already own an item, we will consider purchasing a copy if it otherwise meets our collection criteria. Owing to budgetary constraints, no more than six items will be purchased for any single course.

Individual articles or photocopies of chapters are not eligible for Library course reserve. ERes is recommended for these materials.

ERes: Online course reserves
Individual articles in print or online format, photocopies of chapters, and web pages/sites may be placed on online course reserve, within the limits of copyright law. You may post materials quickly without copyright permission if you or the CIIS Library has purchased the books or reprints, or subscribes to the journals, or if fair use applies. If not, copyright permission must be sought. See the copyright section of the Faculty Guide to ERes for more information.

Submitting Reserve Materials

Library course reserves
  • Check the Library Catalog to ensure that the Library owns the items you wish to place on reserve. Notify the Library as early as possible if the Library will need to purchase a book for your course. Contact the Library Director, Lise Dyckman (575-6181) and/or complete the suggestion for purchase form. It can take over six weeks for the Library to acquire a new book; please take this into account.
  • Submit a separate course reserves request form for each class no less than two weeks before the beginning of the semester.
  • If you wish to place a personal copy of a book or video on reserve, please bring it to the Circulation Desk along with a completed course reserves request form. All materials will be returned to you at the end of the semester.

ERes: Online course reserves

  • If you have never used ERes before, contact the Systems Librarian (575-6187) for an introduction.
  • Obtain clear, 1st generation, single-sided, 8.5x11" photocopies of all documents.
  • See the Faculty Guide to ERes at for detailed directions.

Circulation of Reserve Materials

Library course reserve items circulate to students for two hours at a time. Students who check out reserve items within two hours of the Library's closing may keep them overnight and must return them within two hours of the Library's opening the next day. Overdue fines are $2.00 per day.
