Online Videos
The Laurance S. Rockefeller Library has assembled a sizeable collection of videotaped psychotherapy
sessions, addressing a wide range of counseling situations, populations, approaches, and issues. Two
multi-format video players (VHS or DVD) in the Library are dedicated to the viewing of these and other
CIIS videos; they may also be checked out for one week by students, faculty and staff (with a one week renewal option), and for three weeks
by distance students.
Class use: Faculty wishing to screen videos in class are encouraged to contact the Library two weeks
before the beginning of the appropriate semester to ensure that the specific video will be available
for the date(s) requested. In the event you would like to do this and have not arranged it with the
Library at the beginning of the semester, we may be able to make an exception (depending upon availability).

Brown, Stephanie. Treating alcoholism.

A video set that shows clinicians of all orientations how to provide effective treatment for alcoholics,
without having to choose between a 12-step versus psychotherapeutic approach. Dr. Stephanie Brown follows
the course of treatment through the four stages of her Developmental Model: Drinking, Transition, Early
Recovery, and Ongoing Recovery. In a dramatic reenactment of key moments in seven outpatient sessions over
the course of five years, we see Dr. Brown address the multitude of challenges inherent in the treatment of
alcoholics.

Dale, Barbara. Juliette coping with physical illness. Princeton, NJ : Films for the Humanities,
[2002].
Juliette, a young mother with cystic fibrosis, must have a heart and lung transplant. In this program,
Tavistock specialists work with her, her partner, and her 4-year-old daughter, to help them all cope with
the medical and emotional ordeal of her upcoming operation.

Garland, Caroline. Jan: Facing the Feeling of Guilt. Princeton, NJ : Films for the Humanities,

For ten years, Jan, a 30-year-old male, has been haunted by a car crash in which another man died. In this
program, Jan tries to confront the difficult reality of the accident and the ensuing years of repressed guilt
through the help of psychotherapist Caroline Garland. In four filmed sessions, Caroline helps Jan to break
down the defensive mechanisms he has developed to avoid facing his feelings.

Three years before, the Greens lost their only son in a traffic accident. In this program, they try to confront

Linehan, Marsha. Treating borderline personality disorder: the dialectical approach. New York, NY:
Guilford Publications, [1995].
An important component of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is the use of skills training to help manage
the extreme beliefs, actions, and attitudes that form the criteria for borderline personality disorder.
In this video, Linehan teaches patients the skills of DBT, including mindfulness, distress tolerance,
interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation. The sessions portray a team of therapists working
through the range of problems and frustrations that arise in treatment, and viewers are thus brought into
the team milieu and shown the efficacy of this approach. A short interview with Dr. Allen Frances, DSM-IV
Task Force chair, concludes the video.

Linehan, Marsha. Understanding borderline personality disorder: the dialectical approach. New York, NY:
Guilford Publications, [1995].
Dr. Linehan begins by presenting clinically relevant features of BPD based on DSM-IV criteria and describes the
underlying causes of the disorder with an emphasis on biosocial factors. She then traces the development of her
approach. Segments of actual case sessions (with patients' identities protected) illustrate the nature of the
disorder and the intense emotional discomfort these clients suffer. They also offer viewers a brief introduction
to strategies Dr. Linehan uses to engage the client in the first interview.

Minkoff, Kenneth. Integrated treatment models for dual diagnosis. Farmington, Conn : University of Connecticut Health Center , [1999].
This video shows an interview with an adult male recently divorced, with a history of substance abuse. It demonstrates how Dr. Minkoff integrates physiology, brain chemistry, and emotional dynamics in his approach and how he presents this to the client in order to engage him in participating in his own recovery.

Norcross, John C. Responding therapeutically to patient expression of sexual attraction: a stimulus training tape. Washington , D.C: The Association, [1999].
This video portrays various ways in which clients express their sexual attraction to therapists during sessions and illustrates therapeutically methods for handling them. This stimulus training demonstrates how six psychologists respond in session to clients' expressions of sexual attraction. The vignettes were drawn from videotaped sessions in which professional actors portray actual clients in unscripted and spontaneous exchanges. Each of the vignettes shows the content and process of the client's expression of sexual attraction, the therapist's initial responses, and some of the ensuing transaction.

Psychiatric diagnosis can be classified into several main categories. This program focuses on alcoholism and the five main areas involving psychoactive substance abuse: dependence syndrome, withdrawal state, withdrawal state with delirium, psychotic disorder, and amnestic syndrome. Interviews with several alcoholics illustrate the various mental disorders associated with the illness, their symptoms, and the differential diagnoses associated with each, including Korsakov's psychosis.

Mood disorders, or affective disorders, are discussed in this program together with their symptoms and differential diagnoses. Classifications are based upon the course and severity of symptoms. The two main classifications of mood disorders-- manic and depressive-- are clearly defined and differentiated according to symptoms. The persistent mood disorders cyclothymia and dysthymia are discussed, along with medical causes of mood disorders, such as hypothalamic tumor.

This program demonstrates clinical organic disorders, their characteristics, and differential diagnoses. Divided into the two categories of dementia and delirium, the disorders discussed include those relating to psychoactive substance use; schizophrenia and delusional disorders; mood, neurotic stress-related, and somatoform disorders; and personality disorders.

Personality disorders come in various varieties and degrees of severity, including persistent, ingrained behavior patterns; extreme deviant behavior; and problems in social functioning. Histrionic disorder, anankastic disorder, anxiety disorder, and dependent disorder are the common categories. This program looks at the most common disorders-- paranoid, schizoid, dissocial, and emotionally unstable. It describes the symptoms and criteria for diagnosis.

Schizophrenia, acute and transient psychoses, persistent delusional disorders, and schizoaffective disorders are examined in this program. Their principal abnormalities are divided into the following psychiatric phenomena: disordered thinking, delusions, hallucinations, and abnormal behavior. Specific symptoms of each disorder are discussed. Particular symptoms to look for in patient interviews are provided, along with criteria for diagnosing each disorder.

The video shows an interview with a middle-aged man in recovery diagnosed with bipolar disorder and PTSD. It demonstrates how Dr. Van der Volk works with the sensations and emotions of trauma, rather than the narrative of trauma, reducing its impact in the present. He also explores the sensory motor experience of triggers in memory with current awareness. The tape is a great example of working with the body in psychotherapy.

This video shows an interview with a suicidal 47-year-old single woman with an history of self-injurious behaviors and of severe emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Dr. Walsh demonstrates how to assess self-injurious behaviors, the 6 dimensions of body image, and the client's coping skills. Follows a consultation with the ongoing therapist.

The video shows an interview with a married woman in her late thirties with a history of Panic Disorder. It demonstrates Dr. Wilson's strategic and provocative approach to decrease panic attacks and shows how accepting the anxiety and associated symptoms can be the key to improving the client's functioning.

Yapko, Michael. Breaking patterns of depression hypnosis and building resources. Phoenix , AZ : Zeig, Tucker & Co., [1999].
In this demonstration video, Dr. Yapko combines skills-building with a mix of direct and indirect hypnotic suggestions to teach his client how to "tune out" the barrage of negative thoughts maintaining his depression and "tune into" more positive experiences. In addition to Milton Erickson, Dr. Yapko brings Jay Haley's strategic therapy, Aaron Beck's (cognitive therapy) pragmatism, Allen Funt's ability to interrupt patterns, Virginia Satir's emphasis on "planting seeds," and the basic orientation of "solution-focused" therapy to his work. He describes his work as an approach that emphasizes focusing on psychoeducation: providing information about choices.

Presents Dr. Yapko's single-session interview with a 42 year old woman named Vicki who is dying of cancer. Vicki requests help in learning to manage pain without the use of medication so that she may remain clear-headed for the little time she has left to live. This videotape allows the viewer to 'be there' as the dramatic session unfolds, thus providing access to the subtle nonverbal nuances of the many hypnosis communications employed throughout the interview and hypnosis sessions.

Annunziata, Jane. Play therapy with a young child. Washington , DC : American Psychological Association, [1997].
Dr. Jane Annunziata demonstrates her approach to working with children through play therapy. Her approach is premised on the assumption that a child's problems come from unconscious conflicts and developmental deficits, both of which will be revealed in their play. In this session, Dr. Annunziata works with a six-year old boy named Matthew who has been sad and withdrawn. Through the process of play therapy, Matthew expresses more of his emotions, and the therapeutic alliance becomes stronger.

Dr. Berk interviews an 11-year-old girl in the company of her mother. The girl has been diagnosed with ADHD, has learning and social problems, and has threatened suicide. Her therapist has asked for Dr. Berk's assistance with a diagnostic formulation as the therapist wonders if the client has bipolar disorder, depression, or oppositional defiant disorder. After Dr. Berk speaks with the girl, he gives his diagnostic formulation and recommendations for treatment.

David Epston uses narrative therapy to engage an 11-year old boy, Sebastian, who has been institutionalized for problematic behavior. The session took place in 1993 in Sweden . The questions and translated answers appear as subtitles in the video. The session was life-changing for the boy and his permission was given for this video. David Epston introduces this session and provides a follow-up for the now 19-year old man. The subtitle "Hannah is in my heart now" is a reference to Sebastian's three month old daughter.

A 3-year old boy, Conor bites, pinches, kicks and throws things at others. His parents, Tracey and Chris, want to know why their beautiful baby has turned into a little monster. This program presents the therapy sessions with Conor, his parents, and two child psychiatrists, Drs. Sebastian Kramer and Sarah Wynick. Through observing Conor and prompting his parents to tell their own stories, the doctors offer insights into the child's behavior. The idea that Conor's actions might actually have meaning and not simply be "naughtiness" comes as a revelation to Tracey and Chris.

Young children are either pre-verbal or inexperienced with verbal language and consequently are unable to adequately express their thoughts and feelings or describe threatening life events. In order to understand a child's behavior and plan for care and intervention it is necessary for the caregiver, teacher, or health care provider to determine the child's history and emotional state from other sources. Segments in this program include Determining the Trauma, Guidelines for Caregivers, Non-verbal Interaction, Significant Loss, Dissociating, Being an Example, and Acceptance. Particular emphasis is given to a discussion on how caregivers and teachers can intervene to build trust and provide guidance, predictability, and support.

Older children suffering from the effects of emotional trauma are frequently misdiagnosed as having Attention Deficit Disorder or Chronic Depression. Misdiagnosed characteristics of trauma are typically sex related, with boys who are hyperactive and act-out and girls who dissociate and withdraw. An accurate assessment of the problem is critical to the success of intervention. Common trauma-related problems for adolescents also include learning difficulties, test anxiety, difficulty in forming relationships, difficulty with authority figures, substance abuse, acquiescence to abuse, and violent behavior.

In Treating Adolescents With ADHD , Dr. Robert J. Resnick demonstrates his approach to helping adolescents and their families deal with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a common diagnosis whose symptoms include impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention. Dr. Resnick works with both the parents and the child with ADHD, first to evaluate the environment in which the adolescent lives and then to find ways to make that environment more "ADHD-friendly." In this session, Dr. Resnick counsels a 13-year-old boy and his mother on options for reducing distractions, advocating for accommodations in school, and working with doctors on medication dosage.

Presents a case study and demonstration of psychotherapy with an adolescent having behavioral problems. In Practical Psychotherapy With Adolescents , Dr. Alice K. Rubenstein demonstrates her approach to working with adolescent clients. Because of the complexity of their lives, adolescents often have difficulty describing their feelings and identifying the source of stressors. Dr. Rubenstein helps adolescent clients to identify their feelings and the factors contributing to the problems they are dealing with, and then helps brainstorm possible solutions. In this session, Dr. Rubenstein works with a 15-year-old boy with behavioral difficulties, family conflicts, and academic problems. She helps him find ways to reduce the tension with his father and address some of the problems he is having at school because of his recently diagnosed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

In Teenage Girls , Dr. Karen Zager demonstrates her approach to therapy with adolescent girls. Teenage girls are a complex population difficult to pigeonhole; however, one general fact is that this group usually does not feel that adults listen to them. Dr. Zager therefore recommends listening as the key to working with teenage girls. Therapists must also respect what the client wants to obtain from therapy and avoid imposing therapeutic goals on the teenage girl. In this session, Dr. Zager works with a 14-year-old girl named Lauren who is having issues with family tensions as well as relationship troubles with boys. Dr. Zager works with Lauren to help her see her problems from a broader perspective.

In Functional Family Therapy , Dr. James F. Alexander demonstrates his approach to working with families
with youth at risk. This approach focuses on the strengthening relationships in the family by opening up
communication and reframing negative behaviors by putting them within a positive relational context. In this
session, Dr. Alexander works with two daughters and their mother and stepfather. Initially, he assesses the
state of family relations and works with the family to highlight the strengths they exhibit and ways they can
work toward understanding and improving their relationships.

In Cognitive–Behavioral Couples Therapy , Dr. Arthur Freeman demonstrates his approach to working with couples. This is a present-focused therapy that first looks at a couple's past experiences for ways to improve their interpersonal exchanges. Dr. Freeman works from a perspective that motivates a couple to stay together and helps them to focus on this and break away from past patterns of thought and behavior. In this session, Dr. Freeman works with Kim and Si, a couple having communication difficulties. In addition, because of busy work schedules, the demands of caring for a family of six, and past patterns of interaction, they find it hard to make time to spend together. Dr. Freeman helps foster better communication skills and works with them to focus on the future and move away from past patterns of blame, avoidance, and defensiveness.

In Older Couples , Dr. Paula Hartman-Stein demonstrates her approach to conducting therapy with couples in their later years. Working with older couples involves many issues not common in therapy with younger people, including issues surrounding illness, cognitive impairment, and physical decline, all of which generally cause some stress in marital relationships. Hartman-Stein's approach is to teach couples better ways to cope with the challenges of aging with the resources they have available. In this session, Dr. Hartman-Stein works with a couple in their early 60s who have become entrenched in negative patterns of interaction. After performing an assessment, she builds rapport with the couple and begins the work of instilling hope.

Dr. Zindel V. Segal demonstrates a mind–body approach to helping clients who have experienced depression to prevent a relapse into depressive symptoms. After laying the groundwork for the ways that hypnosis can be used to help people become "unstuck," Dr. Yapko begins his session with Consuelo. A live session shown in real time, this therapeutic interaction is a teaching vehicle as well as demonstration. The addition of subtitles and commentary helps to further clarify the underlying themes addressed by Dr.Yapko and the way in which they are received at different junctures. At the close of the session, Consuelo expresses her belief that a positive change has taken place. And, indeed, at two-month follow-up, which is included on the tape, Consuelo has made progress toward her goal. Further follow-up shows that she has, in fact, completed a book, which is about to be published. The question-and-answer section at the end of the tape adds another dimension to the learning.
