CIIS Library Gift Policy

Gifts of Books, Journals, and Other Library Materials

We are grateful for the many donations that have enriched the Laurance S. Rockefeller Library in the past. However, addition of materials to the Library’s collection requires a substantial investment of time and resources on the part of CIIS; accordingly, acceptance or refusal of any gift is ultimately the decision of the Library Director. Even gifts that meet the donation guidelines may occasionally be refused due to time, space, or other considerations.

Gifts of personal collections or particularly large quantity are generally not accepted. Books, DVDs, or audio CDs may be accepted if they support the curricular and research needs of CIIS and are also:

  • Current (not outdated or superseded)
  • In clean condition (not highlighted, annotated, stained or damaged)
  • Not duplicating materials already in the collection, unless needed as a replacement copy

If you wish to donate more than ten titles to the Laurance S. Rockefeller Library, first create an itemized list including title, author, material type (book, DVD, or CD) and publication date for each item you wish to donate. The Library Director will need this information to determine which items we can accept.

Once accepted, items become the property of the Laurance S. Rockefeller Library and at a later date may be discarded, sold, or donated to other libraries at the discretion of the Library staff.

We will be happy to provide you with a letter acknowledging your gift, if requested. Note that CIIS is not in a position to assist individuals in estimating the value of a gift for tax purposes. Unless otherwise requested, the record in the online catalog will identify the donor.
